Over 33-thousand motor vehicles on Zambian roads have unresolved issues with the tax authority on suspicion that they were dubiously imported into the country, despite being registered by the Road Transport and Safety Agency RTSA.
Sources within the Zambia Revenue Authority have indicated that a lot of vehicles have no clearance from the authority as figures from the RTSA on registered motor vehicles are not tallying with that of ZRA.
This has been regarded as a serious mode of tax evasion by importers of used motor vehicles.
And sources say government is now rolling out an integrated database between RTSA and ZRA where any vehicle that will not have any traceable payment of duty will not be issued with road tax and other related services.
Sources say ZRA will soon move in to impound such vehicles that are on Zambian roads but with tax clearance as this evasion of tax is depriving government of the much needed revenue.
The over 33,000 motor vehicles in question are said to be in the RTSA database, but the same are not cleared by the Zambia Revenue Authority.
ZRA is next month expected to issue an amnesty for the incorrectly imported motor vehicles after the elapse of an amnesty introduced for the general public to clear all illegally imported motor vehicles by 26 May, 2021.
