UPND GOVERNMENT EAGER TO END POVERTY-MWAMBA

Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Hon Doreen Mwamba says the UPND government is in a hurry to end poverty through various interventions such as women empowerment programmes.

She has emphazised that it is the priority of the new dawn administration to raise the economic status of women in the country, in an effort to end poverty both at household and national levels.

Speaking when she graced the Eagles Ladies Club fish and chicken smoking skills graduation ceremony for 65 women at Zambia National Service (ZNS) in Chanyanya in Kafue district yesterday, Hon Mwamba therefore urged the women to establish long lasting business linkages in order to get assured and consistent market.

She said the training sets the women on a strong base to engage in a sustainable and rewarding business for personal, household and community empowerment.

” I must admit that am getting increasingly impressed by the clubs commitment to raising the economic status of women” Hon Mwamba said.

The Minister said she wants to see the club quickly build consistency in the supply of smoked fish on the market, and expressed happiness that Choppies has already offered its shelves for sale of their produce, while ZANACO has offered free financial services to the women.

“I can only re-echo our Republican President’s appeal to other chain stores to emulate Choppies and raise the percentage of local items stocked in their outlets in order to support local businesses” she said.

And Hon Mwamba has pleaded with Zambians to begin consuming more of local products in order to boost local businesses for purposes of industrial growth and job creation.

She expressed confidence that the club can ride on the vast ZNS land to put up a string of 10,000 capacity chicken runs to support commercial chicken rearing, adding that government wants to see ventures like this operate strictly as a business and raised to commercial levels.

And speaking earlier, Eagles Ladies Club patron, Mrs Angela Solochi said the club is working tirelessly to sufficiently capacitate women in areas that are showing a promising business outlook.

She said through government’s support, the club remain ready to assist in the reduction of household and community poverty.

“Our unshakeable resolve is to continue working to raise the profile and position of our fellow women , especially those from the rural and peri-urban areas” Mrs Solochi assured.
