The other day I sat outside the OYDC Matebeto Restaurant having my meal during lunch when I decided to gaze to my left.
My eyes were engrossed with the beauty of the National Heroes Stadium. I noticed that part of the roof which was blown off some weeks ago due to heavy wind was fixed by management. What has left me startled is the fact that I have not seen any person on social media share pictures of the fixed roof like they made the ‘Blown Off’ roof trend.
This made me ponder that indeed in life people will only talk when something negative happens. Many times we fail to highlight or appreciate the positive strides our government make to fix some of these infrastructures whose lifespan might be nearing.
In my few years of working for one of Zambia’s state-of-the-art sports facilities I have come to learn that maintaining such facilities comes with a huge cost and the government needs to be supported by the corporate world and the citizenry at large.
Some materials for replacing, fixing or maintaining these facilities have to be imported and this comes with a cost!
So before we talk or criticise the government or management tasked to run these facilities let us also find out how much it costs to maintain infrastructure like these. Some people who had spoken ill against the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts for their purportedly delay to have the roof fixed are not different from those who would insult their parents for not fixing the roof of the house which has been blown off due to heavy rain or wind.
Anyway, these are my Friday morning thoughts. Enjoy the weekend.
