Boy, 15, puts fellow pupil, 12, in family way
A 12-year-old Grade Six pupil in Chipata has been impregnated by a 15-year-old Grade Seven boyfriend, who has blamed the lack of access to condoms as the main reason for putting the girl in the family way.
An activist believes the case demonstrates the need to make condoms available for pupils in school because there is enough evidence that indeed younger learners are having sexual intercourse.
The boy, who confirmed being in a relationship with the girl, said he has difficulties accessing condoms on account of his age.
“I have not been using protection because I’m young and at the clinic they don’t give condoms to young people,” he said in an interview which was conducted alongside his parents.
The girl is a pupil at Mpezeni Park Primary School while the boy is at Katopola Primary School in the same district.
According to the girl, they had unprotected sex twice at the boy’s friend’s house.
