Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to significantly reduce poverty and social exclusion especially for the vulnerable in society.

Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Doreen Mwamba said this when she delivered a statement during the ongoing 61st session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development in New York, USA.

This year’s theme of the commission is anchored on creating full and productive employment and decent work for all, as a way of overcoming inequalities to accelerate the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Ms. Mwamba therefore explained that Zambia continues to implement policies aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and other vulnerabilities such as the socio-economic impacts of the covid-19 pandemic, by implementing social protection programmes, whose coverage is targeted at the poor and vulnerable women, children, elderly and the disabled.

In realizing the 2030 agenda for creation of productive employment and decent work, the Minister further disclosed that the Zambian government is implementing comprehensive social security reforms aimed at addressing the plight of workers in the formal and informal sectors.

With regards to persons with disabilities, Ms. Mwamba said government has revised the National Disability Policy of 2015 to address emerging issues, and assured that Zambia remains committed to the implementation of the 10% quota for persons with disabilities in all types of employment.

The Minister also highlighted the strides being made to mitigate inequalities arising from pandemics, disasters and other related emergencies such as the implementation of the emergency cash transfer for increased household income and food security.
