Government has officially launched the Community Mobilization Activity on Strengthening Multi Sector Coordination in Child Development and Protection, with a call for collaborative efforts to promote, enhance and safeguard the rights of children in the country.
Minister of Community Development and Social Services,Ms. Doreen Mwamba, who graced the launch in Kabwe, said government prioritizes the welfare of children as evidenced by the enactment of the Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022,aimed at, among other things to realise the national vision for child development and welfare.
She said the overall goal of the act is to provide legislative measures for effective and efficient protection of children, preventing child’s rights violation, abuse, violence and all harmful practices, while providing measures for corrective action where a child right violation has occurred.
Ms. Mwamba has emphasised that the law is not meant to give powers to children over their parents but provided for both children’s rights and responsibilities.
She has since implored all stakeholders to fully understand and create awareness on the provisions of the law in order to put in place coordination structures for planning, implementing , enforcing and adherence to the law.
“There must exist among stakeholders structures promoting coordination and collaborative efforts to ensure children grow up in a safe and secure environment” she emphasized, with a call for state and non state actors to participate in the implementation of the law.
And Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Director for Child Development,Ms.Bridget Moya, called on the media to proclaim the law by ensuring that the provisions regarding children’s rights are adequately and efficiently disseminated.
Ms. Moya noted that over nine Million children, according to the latest census statistics, are in need of care and protection in all sectors, hence the need for all stakeholders to work together to archieve progress in children affairs.
