**Honourable Minister of Community Development and Social Services,Ms Doreen Mwamba has today unveiled the Zambia Agency For Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) board, with a call for professionalism and mainstreaming of the welfare of persons with disabilities.
Ms Mwamba echoed that the new dawn administration is keen on making sure all person with disabilities are part of government’s developmental agenda.
The Minister’s expectations are that the newly inaugurated ZAPD board will operationalize the persons with disabilities act and also implement provisions of the convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, to which Zambia is a state party.
Ms Mwamba also touched on issues of transparency, with a call to put national above personal interest without abusing the support rendered to the agency in carrying out their mandate.”From the time I assumed office, I have made a number of observations to the many challenges that the disability sector is facing.
ZAPD is slowly drifting itself into a DPO or DSO as opposed to a government national body to articulate and implement government’s vision on disability This board must arrest this trend” she said.
It is the Minister’s hope and belief that the new board will work closely with ZAPD management and the Ministry to get developmental programmes as close to the people with disabilities as possible.
And in a vote of thanks, one of the board member, Mr Moses Luneta assured that the new board will work effectively to transform the agency in order to reduce reliance on government for financial and other forms of support.
He said inclusiveness and team work will be actualized so that the mandate of taking care of the welfare for persons with disabilities is achieved.
