Mkandawire’s family unhappy with verdict
The Lusaka High Court has sentenced the man who killed United Party for National Development (UPND) Kabwata Member of Parliament Levy Mkandawire in a road traffic accident to 12 months simple imprisonment.
Judge Ruth Chibbabbuka, who handed down the verdict yesterday, ruled that Alick Jeta Kalenga did not waste the court’s time, was remorseful, as well as a first offender.
Kalenga in mitigation had said he is a senior citizen who deserves a second chance and has learnt a lot during his detention and incarceration following the accident.
But the family members of Mr Mkandawire are dissatisfied with the verdict and will weigh options of the next course of action.
“We were expecting a heavier sentence other than one year, considering the recklessness of the driver, the vehicle was unlicensed, uninsured with no fitness certificate,” Mr Mkandawire’s older brother David Sakala said.
“Even that statement that he rendered assistance to the family was totally false. He ran away, the family was left alone.
