By Flavior Kanungo
CHIEF Ntambu of the Lunda people of Mwinilunga district in North- Western Province has called on traditional leaders across the country to ban what he described as witchcraft behind a moving coffin.
His comment comes in the wake of what transpired in Luano district of Central province where it took sometime for the coffin to be lowered in the grave on claims that the coffin kept moving.
A Moving coffin or otherwise known as Kikondo in some local languages is a traditional ritual performed in some parts of the country where charms are administered on a coffin carrying a dead body with a belief that it will lead mourners to the person behind the death.
And the traditional leader has implored the traditional leaders to eradicate the barbaric killing and injury of innocent people through this practice which has says has brought disunity in chiefdoms.
“This is pure witchcraft and it has nothing to do with the dead but only the selfishness of those some the living in some instances those who carry the coffin, it should be banned without hesitation, ” Chief Ntambu said.
“How can a dead person rise and start harrassing the living?? This nonsense should be stopped as it brings confusion and trauma among community members and the bereaved family,” he added.
He says there is need to embrace Christianity and ensure that funerals are held in dignified manner in order to protect innocent people.
