GOVT TO REINSTATE VAT ON FUEL, INCREASE ELECTRICITY TARIFFS

Government says although the reinstatement of Value Added Tax (Vat) on fuel and increase in the electricity tariffs being one of the harsh conditions that comes with the IMF package, it will ensure that the two conditions do not have a negative impact on the citizens in the long run.

Speaking during a media training on the international monetary fund (IMF), Ministry of Finance and national planning permanent Secretary Mukuli Chikuba says for electricity tariffs, the increase will be done gradually, in the next five years.

Meanwhile Mr. Chikuba has emphasized that there will be no wage and employment freeze in the public service as it is not one of the conditions of the international monetary fund package.

He further says government does not also intend to remove subsidiaries when it comes to social protection programs in the Agriculture Sector.
